The City of Phoenix has designated Pierson Place Neighborhood as historic and unveiled the historic district sign at a special ceremony on May 3 as part of National Historic Preservation Month. Councilman Tom Simplot and Mayor Phil Gordon (pictured at left with neighborhood leaders at the sign unveiling) spoke movingly about the importance of neighbors working together, often overcoming obstacles, to preserve their homes and streetscapes.
Pierson Place, an early residential suburb built largely by individual property owners and mom and pop builders, is located generally between Camelback Road, Central Avenue, the Grand Canal, and Seventh Avenue. Originally outside Phoenix city limits but within a 10-minute drive to downtown, the neighborhood's first subdivision dates to 1924. In 1926, the Arizona Republican advertised half-acre lots in Pierson Place for "$400 and up," with the added convenience of "city conveniences" with "no city taxes."
