[Source: B. Poole, Tucson Citizen] -- A family known for restoring dozens of Tucson's oldest adobe buildings is about to go to court over a longstanding claim that leaky city water mains damaged some of those buildings. Since the early 1970s, Kelley Rollings has spearheaded a family effort to buy and restore more than 30 buildings in Barrio Viejo south of the Tucson Convention Center. Many of the buildings have crumbling walls and rusted electrical parts the family says are the result of moisture seeping in from leaky, century-old pipes under the streets.
After the city rejected claims for damages, the family sued in 2002. The family is asking for an unspecified amount to repair 16 of the properties, which will cost about $600,000, said Donald Rollings, a trustee of the Rollings Trust who is a plaintiff in the suit with his father, Kelley. "If the city can get it done for half of what we estimate, so be it. We're not trying to make money. We're trying to save the history," the younger Rollings said. The case is set for court Feb. 21.
